This is the end result of the process documented in my video "Origin Story!" An act of improvisation, the layers of the story build from simple origins. The main character grows and evolves and morphs into memories, slogans and spirits.
The image is framed by the proscenium and the characters appear and disappear with the brushstrokes of black and white. It's my variety show with special guest stars.

These drawings were created on an old barn wall, in 2015. Chalk on blackboard paint, eraser and water. Roughly 9' x 9'. Shot over many months in time-lapse, this documents a major shift in my life and an important new direction in my work.

Moving out of the barn and into a temporary studio required an adjustment in materials, surface and light. One of the earliest works on paper, I am trying to find my new conversation.

The idea for this video drawing was triggered by a conversation after a wonderful massage. The masseuse commented on how my body felt open but my root chakra seemed troubled. Somehow, putting a name to it allowed me to go deeper into my history.

Inspired by the melancholy and yearning I'd feel from the oft-played, old pop-song "Wildfire" by Michael Murphy. This process took me from my car radio to a place I wasn't expecting.

This was created in Sayulita, Mexico. The temperature was approximately 80 degrees, while New York was enduring a massive blizzard. The studio space, white paper, vertical shape and news flurry kicked in an old response to "snow days". I enjoyed one journalist's description of snow storms being "the best of all natural disasters" (within reason, that is).
I have been working on a series of videos, some of which can be viewed here. The launching point is inspired by an improvisational self-prompt. The fuel source is memory, excavation and the need to follow the line of a mysterious narrative.
The content is not planned, but is in response to enduring questions of identity. This process is a can that is kicked down the undiscovered road. It's springs from my history, body, doubts and moments of connection.

Set to the loop of the sad, pop-song "Wildfire" by Michael Murphey, this video follows the trail of pathos, set off by a car ride home. While exploring this nerve, I kept bumping up against the frustration of never being able to draw horses as a kid. As the drawing unfolded, I was surprised by what the meaning of Wildfire truly meant to me.

The characters that appear in my drawing videos are often explored later in other paintings and drawings. Recently, I recreated some of the characters in stop-motion-photo videos, shooting thousands of photos and editing them together. These are some stills and a few of the characters.
